• Machismo, racism and harassment scandal at Scotland Yard: "Putting a woman into your bed is like spreading butter..."

David Carrick became an

elite policeman

, posted to the Parliamentary and Diplomatic Protection Squad.

In the 17 years he was at Scotland Yard he earned the nickname "Bastard Dave" ("Dave the Bastard") for his rude manner.

His companions came to raise the alarm about his behavior, but until now he had not known how far his excesses went...

Carrick, 48, pleaded guilty this Monday to 49 charges of sexual offenses, committed against 12 women whom he came to

rape and torture, humiliate as his "slaves"

and subject them to all kinds of harassment, warning that no one I would believe them if they testified against a policeman.

Carrick even went so far as to exercise "financial control" over some of his victims, isolating them from their friendly environment and ordering them when they could eat or sleep when they were under his "guardianship".

It is suspected that he

could have committed a total of more than 70 sexual crimes between 2003 and 2020

, "protected" by his uniform and habitually choosing women he met on dating apps and at social events as victims.

The police themselves recognize that we are probably facing one of the biggest sexual predators in recent decades in the United Kingdom.

The alarms went off after his arrest in October 2021, when Carrick was accused of rape.

Investigator Iain Moor pulled the thread and ended up discovering a gruesome plot, including the existence of

a cupboard under the stairs

of his house in Hertfordshire where Carrick locked up his victims naked, beat them with a strap and even urinated on them.

"It is incredible to think that these crimes could be committed by an active police officer," Moor acknowledged at the chilling court hearing on Monday.

"He used to spend a lot of time cultivating relationships with women in order to sustain his appetite for degradation and control. The coercive nature of his criminal acts undermined the victims in the most destructive way... Many of his rapes were violent towards women, who suffered physical injuries".

The case has had a great political impact in the United Kingdom and has once again put Scotland Yard in the pillory, ten months after the resignation as chief-commissioner of

Cressida Dick

.

"I am disgusted and horrified by the revelations," acknowledged London Mayor Sadiq Khan, who once forced Dick's resignation over cases of corruption and sexual abuse within the police force.

David Carrick came to work precisely in the parliamentary and diplomatic protection brigades together with Wayne Couzens, the policeman who pleaded guilty to the kidnapping and murder of executive Sarah Everard, which shocked London in March 2021.

No measures to improve agent selection

"Two years after the horrific murder of Sarah Everard, Conservative ministers have yet to take action to improve standards in the selection and control of police officers," said Labor Party security spokeswoman Yvette Cooper.

"David Carrick was not even suspended while the rape allegations were investigated and was even able to get his gun permit back."

Carrick was actually admitted to Scotland Yard in 2001 (after his time in the army) even after being

accused on one occasion of domestic abuse

.

In 2009 he passed the controls to be able to patrol with a weapon, and in 2017 he managed to renew it despite several disciplinary incidents.

As has been acknowledged by Deputy Chief Barbara Gray, the London police are thoroughly reviewing the cases of more than a thousand agents (of the 45,000 that make up the body) who have been accused of domestic abuse or sexual offenses.

Barbara Gray acknowledged that the Carrick case is "unprecedented"

in the nature and duration of the abuse: "Carrick is a prolific sex offender who has pursued his victims for 17 years, abusing his position as a police officer and committing the most horrible and degrading crimes".

Gray corroborated the fact that Carrick was capable of instilling terror in his victims, subjecting them to sexual harassment and convincing them that no one was going to believe their testimonies against a policeman... "We should have known how to detect this abusive behavior and have taken advantage of the opportunities to expel him from the force. We deeply regret that he was able to use his police role to prolong the suffering of his victims."
