The defender of rights announces an increase in reports of abuse in nursing homes, despite the controversies aroused by Victor Castanet's book "Les gravediggers".
The follow-up to a first report revealed during the Covid crisis, which pointed the finger at this abuse, must be published tomorrow.
France still has so much trouble caring for its elders.
This is the observation made by the defender of rights, who announces an increase in reports for abuse in nursing homes, despite the controversy surrounding the living conditions in the establishments of the Orpéa and Korian groups which had revolted the whole of France following the publication of Victor Castanet's book,
Les fossoyeurs.
The follow-up to a first report revealed during the Covid crisis, which already pointed to this abuse, must be published tomorrow.

“Fear has changed sides”
Between 2015 and 2021, 900 reports had been made.
Since then, in just 18 months, there have already been 280. In detail, almost half of these new complaints relate to mistreatment and a third relate to restrictions on visits.
These figures are skyrocketing, especially since the health crisis and the exit of the gravediggers which, according to Sabrina Deliry, co-founder of the Observatory of the Great Age (Ogra) and the Circle of Close Helpers in Ehpad (CPAE), had a liberating effect. on the voice of the victims.
At first, "the families felt isolated", she says, "then there was a craze, we finally felt supported".
The families of the victims have all contacted each other to take action and denounce this abuse.
"For the first time, fear has changed sides," continues Sabrina Deliry.
More staff
However, the reaction of the Ehpad and the public authorities still does not seem to him up to par: "There are many things that can be dealt with urgently such as isolations or confinements", she assures.
"Many nursing homes still have time restrictions with the possibility of coming only between 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. This is unacceptable".
For the co-founder, "we will not be able to deal with the subject of abuse if we do not put more staff with the elderly".
For this, it calls for an increase in the minimum ratio of supervision, in other words, to have at least eight caregivers for ten residents in nursing homes, i.e. two more on average than in 2019.
