Peru has been rocked by violent protests for the past month, with protesters calling for the president's resignation.

At least 42 people have been killed in clashes with police, Reuters reports.

In an effort to quell the protests, Peru's Congress has voted to bring forward the next election from 2026 to 2024.

Now the country's interior minister, women's minister and labor minister may resign, announced the pressured president Dina Boluarte.

Violent protests

Former president Pedro Castillo was deposed and detained in early December.

He had then tried to dissolve parliament and introduce emergency laws.

A court has ruled that Castillo will be detained for 18 months - this after ruling that he is no longer covered by the immunity from prosecution that the country's president normally enjoys.

Castillo supporters describe the president as kidnapped, while authorities say the allegations against the ousted leader must be thoroughly investigated.
