The Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) denounced this Saturday the "provocative and surreal speech" during the inauguration yesterday in Algeria of the African Nations Championship (CHAN) -in which the Maghreb country does not participate-, after the words of the grandson of Mandela who

called for the liberation of Western Sahara.

"The FRMF strongly denounces the malicious actions and

despicable maneuvers

at the opening of the seventh edition of CHAN, specifically after the provocative and surreal speech that violates the rules governing the organization of football events under the auspices of the Confederation of African Football ( CAF)", read a statement from the Moroccan federation.

The same source also expressed his rejection of "the

racist comments

made by supporters present at the opening ceremony against the Moroccan public", referring to songs chanted by Algerian fans comparing Moroccans to animals.

"The FRMF has sent a letter to the CAF to assume its responsibility for these flagrant violations that have no relation to the

principles and values of football

," said the same source.

In his speech at the opening of CHAN, Mandla Mandela, grandson of the South African leader, described Western Sahara as

"the last colony in Africa"

and called for the liberation of the former Spanish colony.

The Moroccan federation announced last Thursday that its team was not going to participate in the CHAN (of which it is the current champion) alleging that Algeria, with which it has broken diplomatic relations,

has not authorized a direct flight to transport the players.
