The number of irregular entries into the European Union has increased in 2022 by 64% compared to last year, reaching the highest level since 2016, Frontex, the European Border Agency, said on Friday.

330,000 irregular entries were recorded on European territory in 2022. This is reported by Frontex, the European Border Agency.

The number of irregular entries into the European Union has increased in 2022 by 64% compared to last year, reaching the highest level since 2016. And the figures, according to some sources, are underestimated.

In France, for example, irregular entries for the country alone would be around 150,000 per year.

The number of Syrian nationals has almost doubled

At European level, Syrians, Afghans and Tunisians represent the majority with 47% of irregular entries.

The number of Syrian nationals concerned has practically doubled.

On the Balkan route, 145,600 crossings were recorded, an increase of 136% compared to last year and more than half of illegal crossings.

The central Mediterranean route, the second busiest, saw the number of entries exceed 100,000, an increase of more than 50%.

Figures that are likely to change in the years to come with the new migratory challenge that is looming, especially after the departure of French troops from Mali and the weakening of the Sahel.
