This Thursday, the debate on the end of life opened in the National Assembly, in parallel with the citizens' convention.

For opponents of euthanasia, the choice of Olivier Falorni to head the mission to assess the Claeys-Leonetti law raises questions.

For them, "it is surely one of the worst places to assess a parliamentary mission".

The debate on the end of life opened this Thursday in the National Assembly.

A sensitive subject in more ways than one, in particular because MoDem MP Olivier Falorni has been appointed chairman of the Claeys-Leonetti law assessment mission on end of life.

Opponents of euthanasia are convinced that the ground is being prepared for the legalization of active assistance in dying.

"One of the worst placed to assess a parliamentary mission"

The choice to give the presidency of this mission to Olivier Falorni who is at the center of criticism.

The MP MoDem is indeed a strong defender of euthanasia and assisted suicide.

For the opponents, this is not the right person to have a peaceful debate.

"He showed how much he misunderstood the data of palliative care and how much he deliberately confused euthanasia and assisted suicide. We are amazed", underlines the doctor Jean-Marie Gomas, co-founder of the French Society for support and care palliatives.

"It is surely one of the worst places to evaluate a parliamentary mission. And then currently, the government and the Parliament, by using the expression active assistance in dying, are on purpose to maintain confusion", adds -he.

Thursday, alongside Olivier Falorni, 18 elected officials from the various groups in the Assembly began their work with the hearing of former deputy Jean Léonetti, co-author of the current law on the end of life.

The conclusions of this mission are expected in March and will fuel the debate in parallel with that of the citizens' convention.

Enough to lay the foundations for a future bill.
