Friday the 13th, sign of bad luck or day of fortune?

For fans of scratch games or the Loto, this is especially the right time to try to win the jackpot.

Europe 1 went to a tobacco shop, where it was buzzing all day among the superstitious.

Lucky day for the superstitious: January 13 falls on a Friday.

Now or never to try your luck at gambling.

While some are looking at scratch games with their fingers crossed, others are aiming even bigger and betting on the Super Loto.

For this first Friday the 13th of the year, the jackpot at stake is 16 million euros.

In the tobacconists, it is the affluence of the great days.

"It is a lucky charm"

Leaning on the counter, Christy discovers the number 13 on the scratch game he has just bought.

It's his favorite number.

"I have already won 10 euros," he rejoices.

"The 13th is a lucky charm".

A few steps away, Rosette fills her lotto gate.

"I play occasionally";

she explains.

"Just today, because we are the 13th. Whoever tries nothing, has nothing!"

The tobacco shop is packed.

Véronique, meanwhile, is queuing up to buy a few scratch cards.

She also wants to use this day to try to hit the jackpot.

"Especially today, because I tell myself that you never know, it can work!"

For her, it's an occasional hobby.

"I think it's time. I don't want to play every week, I'm not addicted, but once in a while, why not?"

It is in any case already the jackpot for Anne-Marie, the manager.

His turnover has skyrocketed.

"A Friday the 13th, everyone plays. I don't know why, superstition or no superstition, but hey, that's how it is. It's a Friday the 13th so there's a Super Loto. People play a little more than usually, either a little scratch or a little lotto".

Every Friday the 13th, four million French people flock to tobacconists to try their luck.

The second Friday the 13th of the year will be held in October, one last fluke before the next one on the list almost a year later, in September 2024.
