The Telegraph newspaper reported in an editorial today, Wednesday, that Britain is preparing to send Challenger 2 tanks to Ukraine, and said that if it did, it would represent a major escalation in Western military support for Kiev.

The newspaper pointed to the caution with which the Western powers acted so far with regard to the weapons that were happy to provide to Kiev.

However, she pointed out that with the severe depletion of the Russian forces in terms of men and equipment due to the many setbacks that they suffered during the past year, there is a strong argument for providing more advanced weapons to the Ukrainians, to enable them to defeat the invaders and complete the liberation of their lands.

The newspaper believes that this step will help Britain regain its leadership role in the Ukrainian conflict, which it enjoyed during Boris Johnson's premiership, but this role has seemed less since Rishi Sunak became prime minister despite his insistence that he is still committed to the Ukrainian cause.

She said sending tanks and other appropriate weapons to Ukraine would reassure Kyiv, while sending a clear message to Moscow that Britain and its allies remained committed to resisting Russian aggression.

She added that the West should not be ashamed of hastening Russia's defeat.
