The government wants to remove the restriction that currently exists in the Environmental Code, which states that Sweden can have a maximum of ten reactors in operation.

The restriction that states that reactors may only be in three locations must also be scrapped.

With this, they hope that it will be possible to build several small reactors around Sweden where the need exists.

The nuclear power plants must be built close to electricity-intensive users such as heavy industries - and Energy Minister Ebba Busch does not rule out that this means that a nuclear power plant is also built in Sápmi.

"Better nuclear power plants than wind turbines"

The Sámi Parliament's chairman of the board, Håkan Jonsson, states that the Sámi Parliament has not taken a position on the question of nuclear power.

- This is a hugely complex issue and we are facing a crossroads in how Sweden as a whole should deal with this, but we certainly have to discuss this in the Sami Parliament, not least if nuclear power becomes relevant in the northern part of Sweden.

He himself is cautiously positive about the news.

Wind power has been troublesome for the reindeer industry for several years.

The large wind farms have largely been built in reindeer grazing areas.

That at the same time as they take up large natural areas.

If Jonsson has to choose between wind power and nuclear power, the choice is a given.

- In relation to wind power, 1-3 nuclear power plants make a significantly smaller impact than if we were to have wind power plants on pretty much every mountain in northern Sweden, says Håkan Jonsson.
