It is an established tradition that the Commission visits the new presidency country at the beginning of the presidency.

The meeting aims to promote future collaborations while also giving the government a proper chance to present its priorities for the coming six months.

The visit lasts two days and, in addition to deliberations, the delegation will also visit LKAB's mine and the space center Esrange.

On Friday, Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson (M) and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen will hold a joint press conference.

On site in Kiruna is also King Carl Gustaf, who will hold a special welcome and then have his own meeting with von der Leyen, TT reports. 

The government states that it has chosen Kiruna as the meeting place to showcase a unique part of Sweden.

"A unique region in the EU where a green industrial transition is currently underway that is of historic scope," says Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson in a press release.

Large parts of the new Kiruna center and Jukkasjärvi are blocked off in connection with the meeting, and accessibility for the public will therefore be affected, the police state.

Sweden's presidency of the Council of the European Union, often called the Council of Ministers, began on January 1 and lasts until June 30.
