Putin supports the initiative to raise the age of conscription in the Russian army to 30

Dmitry Peskov, a spokesman for Russian President Vladimir Putin, said that the latter supported the initiative to raise the age of conscription in the Russian army.

However, the reasons for such a decision and other details about the possible implementation of this measure must be submitted to the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation.

"The argument must be presented by the Ministry of Defense, and in this case it is exclusively within the competence of the Ministry of Defense," the Kremlin spokesman said, according to the state-run VestiRu website.

Peskov added: "Conceptually, in fact, this idea was supported by the head of state, but the details, the design of this idea, are still necessary and information from the Ministry of Defense should be known as a primary source."

On December 21, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu proposed, at the Council of Military Administration, to gradually increase the conscription age for Russians from 18 to 21, and to raise the limit to 30.

At the same time, the Minister stressed the need to ensure that citizens can, if they wish, enter military service under a contract or be called up from the first day of joining the service.

Earlier in the day, the chairman of the State Duma Defense Committee, Andrei Kartapolov, said the transition to a new conscription age system could begin this spring.

The deputy admitted that during the transitional period, they will be recruited into the army "according to a mixed type" - that is, people between the ages of 18 and 30.
