Rising U.S. consumer prices eased again last month, bolstering hopes that inflation's grip on the economy will continue to loosen this year and possibly require less drastic action by the Federal Reserve to control it.

Inflation eased to 6.5 percent in December from 12 months earlier, the US government reported this afternoon.

It was the sixth decline in a row compared to the previous year.

On a monthly basis, prices fell 0.1 percent from November to December, the first drop since May 2020.

The rate of inflation, although extremely high, has calmed down since June when the consumer price index was 9.1 percent up compared to the same month last year in the United States.

Inflation has been the highest in 40 years in the country and the development of recent months has caused the central bank to further raise the interest rate over time.
