A 53-year-old man and his 82-year-old mother died Tuesday evening in a violent house fire in Bénéjacq, south of Pau, said Wednesday the public prosecutor of Pau Rodolphe Jarry.

“According to the first elements of the investigation, the 26-year-old grandson would have left the home with a friend, Tuesday around 10 p.m. to go to a restaurant, indicates the magistrate.

His 82-year-old grandmother was lying in bed at the time, while his 53-year-old father was in the main room of the accommodation.

The injured grandson was taken to hospital

On his return around 10:30 p.m., “the grandson noticed the presence of smoke in the house and some flames near the fireplace.

He got his grandmother out of the apartment, but was unable to help his father.

In cardiorespiratory arrest, the octogenarian nevertheless died shortly after midnight.

The father's body was found by firefighters around 2:30 a.m.

“The grandson, conscious but injured, was transported to the Pau hospital center.

The prosecution has opened an investigation into “search for the causes of death.

Investigations are continuing to determine the causes of the fire.
