Outgoing party leader Annie Lööf was quick to congratulate Muharrem Demirok on her Facebook page.

She writes that she has worked with Demirok for a long time, both in the party board and youth association.

"He has a social, warm personality, who always does his utmost.

He has a very clear green, social liberal compass and strong roots in the entire Center Party.”

Helena Lundgren, group leader of the Center Party in Vindeln's municipality, believes that she would rather have seen the election fall on Daniel Bäckström.

But she emphasizes that Demirok's background as a municipal politician is positive.

- I hope he can settle in and understand the real people and what it's like to be a center party around the country.

We lack contact with reality based on how things are in the party right now.

Bäckström receives criticism

Daniel Bäckström (C), group leader in the Riksdag, was one of the main candidates to succeed Annie Lööf.

He was instead elected first deputy party leader.

A proposal that is criticized by the Center's youth association and center students.

"CUF does not have confidence in Daniel Bäckström as 1st deputy party leader.

The Center Party is a party that will stand up for liberal values, the equal value of all people and LGBTQ rights.

Daniel's view on LGBTQ issues makes him impossible for us as 1st deputy party leader," writes Réka Tolnai, union president CUF on Twitter.

The criticism has its background in the fact that Daniel Bäckström replied that he "will probably have to think" about whether he wants to marry same-sex couples.

- I do not understand that statement based on my strong commitment to the equal rights and value of all people, says Daniel Bäckström to Sveriges Radio.
