In Chad, the transitional presidency and the Self-Defense Committee of Miski, a small locality in the province of Tibesti, located in northern Chad, have just announced the signing of an agreement, which definitively consecrates peace in this part of the country, where tensions remained despite the signing of a first agreement in November 2019.

A first peace agreement, signed in November 2019 between the government of Idriss Deby Itno, now defunct, and the Self-Defense Committee of Miski, had made it possible to end a year of

clashes between the two parties

.

But several major demands of the Committee had not then found satisfaction, including the question of the exploitation of gold deposits, at the origin of the insurrection of the inhabitants of the area.

The peace had held, but tensions had been rising for more than a year, which no doubt prompted Mahamat Idriss Déby's transitional government to let go, with the cancellation of the ordinance linking the Department of Yebbi-Bou in the province of Borkou, almost a year ago, or the dismissal of a canton chief who was controversial ten days ago.

The thorny issue of mining

All that remained was to settle the thorny issue of mining.

Negotiations under the auspices of a Libyan facilitator, Hassan Moussa, between the transitional president's new chief of staff, Idriss Youssouf Boy, and the Miski Self-Defense Committee, took place in Miski over the weekend.

"

An agreement that definitively seals peace in this part of Chad was signed on Sunday

", rejoiced with RFI the new spokesperson for the presidency, Mahamat Brah.

And its enforcement began right away, he continued.

Already, the Minister in charge of Mines signed texts yesterday which suspend the activities of the 9 authorized mining companies and gold panning, and which require the eviction of the thousands of clandestine gold washers who are rampant throughout the sector.
