George Pell,

a leading conservative Roman Catholic and former Vatican treasurer who in 2020 was acquitted of

sexual abuse allegations against two minors in the 1990s

, died Tuesday aged 81, his private secretary said. .

Father Joseph Hamilton confirmed to Reuters that Pell died in Rome on Tuesday night of cardiac arrest at a Rome hospital.

Pell was released in 2020 after Australia's highest court overturned his six-year prison sentence.

In the ruling, the full judges of the High Court of Australia considered that there was "a significant possibility that an innocent person may have been convicted because

the evidence did not establish guilt

with the required standard of proof."
