Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch have called for the "serious" attacks and assaults on public buildings in the capital, Brasilia, to be investigated and those involved, including instigators, organizers and financiers, punished.

She urged Amnesty International to ensure a "prompt, impartial, serious and effective investigation" into the circumstances leading up to yesterday's attacks in Brasilia, in order to identify, prosecute and hold all of them accountable.

Amnesty also investigated the destruction of documents and violations of the security and safety of journalists covering events and security forces officers who were attacked by groups of civilians.

It indicated that the attempts to destroy and take equipment and cameras from the media professionals is a "serious violation of the right to freedom of expression and the press."

The organization said those responsible for the events must be investigated, prosecuted, tried and punished, in accordance with international human rights standards.

She cautioned that international human rights standards allow demonstrations to be dispersed on specific occasions, including, for example, "when they incite discrimination, hostility or violence."

"Today's invasion of Brasilia does not meet international standards for peaceful protest," she said.

For its part, the Watch said that the violence and vandalism that took place in the Brazilian capital yesterday constitutes "a reprehensible attack on democratic institutions by people who seek to deny Brazilians the right to vote for the leaders of their choice."

She added that this attack was "the culmination of a years-long campaign by former President Jair Bolsonaro and his allies to undermine democratic principles and spread baseless allegations of election fraud."

"Police and prosecutors must investigate not only those who committed the violence, but those who instigated and financed it must be held accountable for this very serious attack on Brazilian democratic institutions," Watch said.
