Al-Jazeera correspondent in Syria reported that trucks carrying UN humanitarian aid entered Idlib governorate through the Bab Al-Hawa border crossing with Turkey, according to the previous UN aid entry mechanism.

The UN Security Council has extended the mechanism for entering UN aid across the border without permission from the Syrian regime for a period of 6 months.

The Al-Jazeera correspondent also reported the continuation of the entry movement through the regular Bab Al-Hawa crossing for commercial convoys and the entry of patients and critical humanitarian cases.

The decision allows the entry of humanitarian aid through the Bab al-Hawa crossing without permission from the Syrian regime, and it came at a time when the "Response Coordinators" organization in Syria announced that the number of people in need of humanitarian aid in Syria exceeded 15 million.

For her part, the US delegate to the United Nations, Linda Thomas Greenfield, welcomed the decision of the UN Security Council, and said that the mechanism should have been renewed for a year, not just 6 months.

The US representative made it clear that the needs are all over Syria, and are greater than they have ever been.

On the other hand, the Russian delegate, Vasily Nebenzya, described the renewal decision as difficult, adding that the step should not be considered a change in Moscow's principled position on the mechanism.

The Russian delegate added that Western delegations commend their efforts in delivering humanitarian aid to Syria, and avoid another very disturbing issue, which is unilateral sanctions that negatively affect ordinary Syrians, considering that sanctions are the main factor behind the deterioration of the humanitarian situation.

Today, Tuesday, the period of the previous UN mandate to transfer aid to Syria ends, as the Security Council renewed the aid mechanism on July 12 for a period of only 6 months, under Russian opposition pressure, unlike previous times, as the mechanism was extended for a year.

According to Resolution No. 2156 of 2014, the entry of humanitarian aid into Syria was approved through 4 crossings: Bab al-Salam and Bab al-Hawa on the Syrian-Turkish border, al-Yarubiyah on the Iraqi border, and al-Ramtha on the Jordanian border.

However, Resolution No. 2504 of 2020 reduced the crossings to two, namely "Bab al-Hawa" and "Bab al-Salam" for a period of only 6 months, while the "Al-Yarubiyah" crossing in Iraq and "Ramtha" in Jordan were closed, and after that Resolution No. 2533 of 2020 was reduced to a crossing One is the Bab al-Hawa crossing, and he added the introduction of aid across the contact lines from regime areas to opposition areas.
