Passengers should be able to find a seat on the S-Bahn trains more easily from April.
As reported by Deutsche Bahn, from April it will be possible to find out how full the individual wagons are, both on displays on the platforms and on the vehicles and with the help of an app on the smartphone.
This makes it easier for passengers to find a seat.
At the same time, the S-Bahn could depart more punctually if passengers boarded cars that were less occupied.
In the future, Deutsche Bahn will also know exactly how busy the trains are, which will make scheduling easier.
The number of passengers is measured in various ways, including counters on the doors and light sensors in certain places that scan passing trains.
The data would then be transmitted in a matter of seconds.
The Rhine-Main area is not the first region in which Deutsche Bahn wants to offer the new service.
According to their announcement, the new displays will initially be used on individual routes of the Hamburg S-Bahn and in the Stuttgart S-Bahn network.
The start of regional traffic between Hamburg and Lübeck is planned for February.
From April onwards, the group intends to offer the new service not only in the Rhine-Main region, but also on the Berlin S-Bahn, although not immediately across the board.
