Russia withdraws from the European Convention against Corruption

Russia chose today, Monday, to withdraw from the European Convention against Corruption, in a step that comes after its withdrawal from the Council of Europe in the wake of the start of the Russian military operation in Ukraine.

Russian President Vladimir Putin asked the State Duma to cut off compliance with the Council of Europe's Anti-Corruption Convention, which Russia signed in 1999. The date for the vote on cutting off compliance with the agreement has not yet been set, but it is expected to take place soon.

In his letter to the State Duma, Putin said the withdrawal was the result of the council's decision to restrict Moscow's participation in a body tasked with overseeing general compliance with the agreement, something he called "unacceptable and discriminatory".
