If the figures are correct, it would mean that around 88.4 million people have been infected in the province, which has close to 100 million inhabitants.

The statistics are not verified.

The spread of covid-19 has gained momentum in China since the authorities in Beijing withdrew the criticized zero-covid policy in early December.

Before that, the inhabitants of the world's most populous country lived with lockdowns, quarantines and mass tests that lasted ever since the coronavirus first broke out.

The already strong spread of infection is assumed to increase further during the Chinese New Year, when millions of Chinese are expected to travel from the big cities to visit relatives in smaller towns.

Threatens to take countermeasures

The spread of infection has caused several countries, including Sweden, to introduce special entry rules for travelers from China.

China, in turn, has reacted strongly to the measures and has threatened to take countermeasures if they are not lifted.

"This has no scientific basis and some methods are completely unacceptable," Mao Ning, a spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, said last week.

China's economy has been affected by the lockdown in a negative sense, which is said to be one of the reasons why the zero-tolerance policy was lifted in early December.
