Gunmen have kidnapped more than 30 people in an attack on a train station in southern Nigeria, police and local authorities said Monday.

Kidnappings are common in Nigeria, especially in the northwestern and central states of Africa's most populous country.

Police and local authorities said the attack on the train station in Edo state took place on Saturday night and the attackers opened fire before kidnapping passengers waiting for a train to Warri in the south.

In March 2022, militants blew up a section of the railway line between the capital Abuja and Kaduna in the north, killing eight people and kidnapping dozens of passengers who were released over the following months for ransom.
