Senegal.. 40 dead in a traffic accident, and the president declares mourning

At least 40 people were killed and dozens injured in a bus crash in central Senegal, the country's president said Sunday.

President Macky Sall said in a tweet on "Twitter" that the accident occurred in the village of Jenibi in the Kafrin district at approximately 3:30 am.

He added, “I am deeply saddened by the tragic road accident that occurred today in Jenibi, which caused the death of 40 people and many serious injuries.

I extend my deepest condolences to the families of the victims and wish a speedy recovery to the injured.”

President Al-Haddad announced three days, starting Monday, and said he would convene a ministerial council to discuss road safety measures.

Prosecutor Sheikh Ding said the accident occurred on National Road No. 1 when a public bus burst a tire and swerved across the road into another bus coming from the opposite direction.

He said at least 78 people were seriously injured.
