A riot broke out in a Myanmar prison, killing one and injuring 60 others.

Prisoners responded with gunfire as prisoners protested against torture and beatings, resulting in many casualties.

Myanmar's military government said yesterday (7th) that one inmate died in a riot at Pathein Prison west of Yangon, Myanmar's largest city, on the 6th local time.

The dead were said to be political prisoners charged with terrorism.

In addition, 63 inmates were injured and 11 police and security personnel were also injured.

The military government said about 70 inmates had escaped from their cells and vandalized prison property after prison guards found one inmate's cell phone and took disciplinary action.

The military government added that the detainees attacked them with sticks, bricks and pieces of cement, and fired guns to suppress them.

In the process, an inmate caught possessing a cell phone was shot and killed, and eight were reported to be in critical condition.

Radio Free Asia reported that the protests were sparked by the fact that prison guards tortured and beat inmates all night long.

The Political Prisoner Support Association revealed that 17,000 people were arrested and detained by the military after the coup in February 2021.
