More than two years after his election, US President Joe Biden begins his first official visit to Mexico this Sunday, January 8.
On the menu: record migrations to the United States, which pass most of the time through this country, and overdoses caused by fentanyl, an extremely powerful synthetic drug produced by Mexican cartels.

Joe Biden will begin his visit with a stop in El Paso, the border town in southern Texas, a way to silence critics who accuse him of never having traveled the more than 3,000 kilometers of common border in two years in office.
He will then be in Mexico City on Monday January 9 to meet his counterpart Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, before a tripartite summit on Wednesday January 11 with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
Fentanyl
Before that, Joe Biden and Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador will talk about migration, while in the United States, some 2.3 million arrests and deportation measures for undocumented immigrants were recorded last year.
Also on the program is fentanyl, this synthetic drug produced by Mexican cartels which is responsible for two-thirds of the 108,000 overdose deaths in 2021 on the other side of the Rio Grande.
“
Extend
information sharing
”
Washington says it wants to “
expand information sharing
” with Mexico;
a country which, just before this visit, announced on January 5 the capture of Ovidio Guzman, one of the biggest traffickers of methamphetamines (and son of drug baron El Chapo Guzman).
Finally, climate change and above all cooperation in so-called clean energies should also be addressed: Mexico City hopes to benefit from the efforts of Washington, which is trying to reduce its dependence on Asian manufacturers.
