One dead and 16 injured when two metro trains collided in Mexico City

One person was killed and 16 others injured when two metro trains collided in the Mexican capital, which is home to about 20 million people, the authorities announced Saturday.

"Sixteen people have been hospitalized... So far, unfortunately, one death has been reported," Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum said in a tweet.

According to preliminary information, one train collided with another for reasons that are still undetermined in a tunnel linking Potrero and La Rasa stations on Line No. 3 of the subway network that crosses the capital from north to south.

Mexico City's metro system is often criticized for its poor maintenance of facilities.

In May 2021, a bridge collapsed as a train passed, killing 26 people and injuring about 100 passengers.

This metro network, which was inaugurated in 1969, includes 12 lines, 195 stations, and extends over 226 km.
