In the United States, a first-year elementary school student shot and seriously injured a teacher who was admonishing him in the classroom.

According to the Associated Press and CNN, on the afternoon of the 6th, in an elementary school classroom in Newport News, a port city in Virginia, USA, a 6-year-old first-year male student talked back to a female teacher in her 30s and fired a pistol while arguing.

The teacher was seriously injured in the shooting and is in critical condition, but is recovering through treatment, police said.

The student was found to have committed the crime while carrying a handgun to school.

Police are investigating how he got the gun.

Police said the student fired a gun at the teacher.

It's not a misfire accident.

Police detained the student.

No other students were hurt in the shooting.

Shocked students evacuated to the school gymnasium and returned home after receiving psychological counseling.

School will be closed on Monday, the 9th.

Newport News Mayor Philip Jones said, "City councils, school districts, etc. must not only take appropriate follow-up action, but also create the right policies to ensure that this does not happen again."

New Force News Public Schools Superintendent George Parker said, "It is shocking and heartbreaking. We must educate our children properly and keep them safe."
