Known as the first of the four major grottoes, Longmen Grottoes are located in the southern suburbs of Luoyang, the ancient capital, on both sides of the Yi River.

The so-called Dragon Gate was dug by Dayu to control the water, and the legend of the fish jumping over the Dragon Gate also happened here.

There, the two mountains face each other, the Yishui River flows, the Buddha's light is beautiful, and the scenery is beautiful. It is a wonder of heaven described by Su Guo, a poet of the Song Dynasty, that "the towering two mountain gates share a beautiful water".

The Longmen Grottoes were excavated in the reign of Emperor Xiaowen of the Northern Wei Dynasty and have a history of 1,500 years. There are more than 2,300 caves, more than 100,000 statues, and more than 2,800 inscriptions.

Because of its grand scale, majestic momentum, exquisite carvings and rich themes, the Longmen Grottoes have been rated as "the highest peak of Chinese stone carving art" by UNESCO and included in the "World Heritage List".
