The spruces are collected between January 2-15 at recycling stations in the towns of Strängnäs, Stallarholmen, Mariefred and Åker's piecemeal mill.

 - This is a good opportunity to reuse the Christmas tree that many people have at home, says Kristina Svinhufvud, VA and recycling strategist at Strängnäs municipality.

Sunk in Lake Mälaren

Kristina Svinhufvud explains that there are large areas on the lakebed where the fish lack protection because there is no vegetation or topography that they need.

- Then we create these places by lowering rice and bushes, she says.

The plan is for the Christmas trees to be lowered into shallow exploited bays at three locations in Lake Mälaren and at one location in Lake Visnaren.

Recycle the tree

If you miss handing in your Christmas tree between the relevant dates, it must be recycled at one of the municipality's recycling centers.

- If you have a red spruce that comes from the forest, you can ask a horse owner if they want it in their paddock.

Because horses like to eat spruce, says Kristina Svinhufvud.

In the video clip above, Kristina Svinhufvud talks about the protection the Christmas trees can give the fish.
