It was in 1908 that the camellia tree was planted on Strömsberg's farm at Ljungarum in Jönköping.
The municipality believes that it was already 40-50 years old then.
Camellia is a tree that originates from Asia and therefore may have difficulty thriving in our latitudes.
How unique is the tree?
- I know that there are a few more large privately owned camellia trees in Sweden, but I doubt that they have such a thick trunk and are as old as this one, says Glenn Öster, park engineer for Jönköping Municipality.
The municipality of Jönköping is responsible for the care of the tree.
It has become a tradition since the turn of the millennium that the municipality has an open display if the tree blooms in January/February.
During the first visiting hour on Friday, 150 people had come to look.
