From the start of the 2023 school year, a weekly hour of support or deepening in mathematics or French will be compulsory for all sixth-grade students, partly taught by a school teacher.

This is already the case in the academy of Amiens, where the device of "6th springboard" is tested which serves as inspiration for the Ministry of National Education.

One hour of weekly support in mathematics or French with a school teacher... This is the proposal formulated by the Minister of National Education Pap Ndiaye this week to straighten the level in 6th grade, a novelty which will be put in place from the back to school 2023. Some colleges of the academy of Amiens have already been experimenting with a similar device since September called "springboard class", which the Minister of Education was inspired to make his announcement.

In Fresnoy-le-Grand, in the Aisne, for two hours on Wednesdays, the 6th graders, divided into groups of levels or as a whole class, welcome a school teacher who gives lessons with their French or mathematics teacher.

Improving the transition from primary to secondary

"Hercules must complete twelve ordeals…" Jade begins reading a text, before answering comprehension questions.

Its shortcomings were identified by a test carried out at the end of CM2.

Since the start of the school year, she has therefore had priority in order to benefit from the help of Rémi Barthés, a teacher from a neighboring school, who devotes two hours of his Wednesday morning to these 6th graders.

"I am convinced that there is a weak link in the transition between primary and secondary school," says the teacher.

"So I said to myself that I was going to try this experiment, which is done on a voluntary basis, paid overtime".

 What innovations in tutoring?

A boost for student confidence

This master lingers with each student who requests him.

“So, what did you find as an answer?” he asks one of them.

"Heracles? The Hydra of Lerna?"

This lesson hour appeals to Marwan.

“In addition, small groups, for those who are afraid to speak in front of everyone, it's better… We feel more at ease!”, he explains.

And the progress is already being felt for Mathéo.

"To read faster, it worked because at the beginning of the year, I did 114 words in one minute, whereas now I score better than what is expected in 6th grade," he says. he proudly.

In this academy, for nearly a third of the students, the "fluency", that is to say the ability to quickly read a text reached in CM2 barely the level expected in CE2.
