Heavy rains and damaging winds knocked out power to tens of thousands of homes and businesses in northern California on Friday, as the region braced for another bout of bad weather this weekend.

The National Weather Service said torrential rains of up to 15 centimeters are expected, potentially causing flash floods and landslides.

The authority added that in addition to the heavy rains, snow is expected to fall between 30 and 90 centimeters thick during the weekend on the Sierra mountain range, where snow accumulations were measured between 30 and 45 centimeters high earlier this week.

The alarming prediction comes on the heels of a huge storm from the Pacific Ocean that brought high winds, heavy rain and heavy snow across the region for two days.

As of Friday morning, 60,000 homes and businesses remained without electricity due to the weather, according to data from the American poweroutage.us website.

At least 6 people have been killed due to bad weather since the weekend, including an infant who was killed when a tree fell on a mobile home in the north of the state.
