The incident took place at 6:55 a.m. at the airfield barracks in Wiener Neustadt, a town in Lower Austria.

Soldiers from the Jagdkommando are stationed in the barracks, these are the Austrian special forces.

According to the Ministry of Defence, a 20-year-old conscript man threatened his comrades and attacked his superior during the changing of the guard.

This was the "officer of the day" on duty, an experienced 54-year-old non-commissioned officer.

"Several shots were fired in the course of the argument, after which the conscript was fatally hit," the Ministry of Defense said.

The non-commissioned officer survived the incident and was being treated in hospital.

It was initially unclear whether his injury resulted from a gunshot.

Those involved in the incident are being looked after by the Army Psychological Service, and an investigative commission has been set up.

The investigations are conducted by the civilian police.

The murder and crime scene group of the State Criminal Police Office is conducting forensics and interviews, as a police spokesman said.
