On December 6, a young 21-year-old motorcyclist was hit and run over by the driver of a utility vehicle in Hyères (Var), who then fled.

The victim died of his injuries.

Very quickly, witnesses told investigators that the driver "had a very dangerous driving", explains to

20 Minutes

the commissioner Philippe Dussaix, head of the judicial police of Toulon.

“At one point, he overtook a vehicle in a rather dangerous way on a roundabout.

The biker signaled to the driver to calm down and slow down,” he continues.

Far from slowing down, the suspect accelerated, hit the motorcyclist who was in front of him and crushed him before fleeing.

"There was really a desire on the part of the vehicle involved to hit the motorcycle and do nothing to avoid it," said the police officer.

The first investigations, entrusted to the police station of the city, did not make it possible to find him.

The Toulon prosecutor's office requested, on December 15, the opening of a judicial investigation on the count of intentional homicide.

The investigating judge decides to entrust the investigation to the PJ.

"A real traffic offender"

At the scene of the accident, a piece of the front grille of the searched vehicle was found.

Thanks to the serial number on it, the investigators were able to find the supplier of the part.

And the latter gave them the contact details of the buyer.

The suspect was arrested on January 2 and taken into custody.

The police found that he had tried to repair his vehicle with tape.

This 63-year-old trader was indicted and remanded in custody.

Despite concordant testimonies, the suspect "denied involvement", explains the head of the Toulon PJ.

“He remained very detached from everything that had happened, saying that he had nothing to do with it, that he did not see the motorcyclist, that he had a black hole and that he did not realize what had happened.

The investigations also revealed that behind "everyman" was hiding "a real traffic offender".

His vehicle had indeed been involved in dozens of traffic violations in the past.

The suspect had the idea of designating an American acquaintance as the user of the vehicle using a copy of his identity papers.

In this way, he hoped not to lose points and keep his driving license.

"If we combined all the offenses committed, he should have had no license for a long time," said Philippe Dussaix.
