USS Chung-Hoon, an Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer, made a planned passage through the Taiwan Strait on January 5.
It is noted that the passage took place outside the territorial waters of any coastal state.
The press service added that the action demonstrates the US commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific region.
On December 25, the Chinese Navy conducted a firing exercise and patrol near the island of Taiwan.
