• The Galin swimming pool finally opens its doors on Tuesday after eight years of being closed to the public.

  • The presence of asbestos had triggered the closure of the equipment and a series of hazards complicated the work.

  • The swimming pool is connected to the urban heating network, powered by geothermal energy, to limit its energy consumption.

It was a burden inherited from the Juppé years for the team of Pierre Hurmic (EELV).

The Galin swimming pool, the only bathing facility for the Bastide district of Bordeaux, on the right bank, had been closed since 2014. The discovery of asbestos in the ventilation ducts had caused it to be closed that year, and the construction site had not only started at the end of 2019, due to numerous difficulties, particularly technical ones.

The health crisis also delayed the work, which lasted three years.

It was impossible to wipe the slate clean of this listed 1960s swimming pool.

After reopening dates announced and then postponed, it's finally official, it opens to the public on Tuesday January 10 at noon.

A reopening eagerly awaited by the inhabitants of the district and the historic swimming and diving clubs who will also be happy to find their swimming pool.

The town hall has spent a total of 20 million euros for the rehabilitation of this facility built in the sixties.

An envelope which has not ceased to increase over the years but which should make it possible to propose a compromise between preservation of heritage and functionality, hopes the municipality.

Limit energy consumption

“It is connected to the urban heating network (geothermal), because a swimming pool is one of the most energy-consuming equipment, points out Mathieu Hazouard, deputy mayor in charge of sports.

A rock stone-based filtration system provides good water quality and optimized water consumption.

To deal with the energy crisis, the temperature in all the city's swimming pools has been slightly lowered: it will be 27°C for the large pool, 28.5°C for the small one and 31°C for the paddling pool.

“It would be utopian to say that these are virtuous equipment, it remains energy sinkholes, adds Laurent Guillemin, deputy mayor in charge of the cycle and the economy of water resources.

What costs the most is not to heat the water, but the air, to 26-27°C, so that it is comfortable for all users.

The paddling pool was created on the occasion of the rehabilitation and an outdoor terrace with games and plantations was also fitted out.

“An innovative system treats pool renewal water by recovering calories for preheating domestic hot water and supplying toilet flushes,” explains Philippe Nouaillant, head of the aquatic and nautical sports department.

The swimming pool will be able to accommodate six classes at the same time and a weight room has been created and will initially be reserved for sports associations.

Changing rooms adapted for people with reduced mobility and an elevator have also been installed, as the swimming pool has the particularity of being located on the first floor.

The equipment is calibrated to accommodate 220 people at the same time and can rise to 400 in the summer, with additional staff.

Valuable equipment in the event of a heat wave,

especially

in a district experiencing strong population growth.

“We are doubling in population,” recalls its deputy mayor Françoise Frémy.

Five swimming pools in Bordeaux

Of the five facilities in the city, three will be subject to work soon.

The Grand Parc swimming pool is now closed for renovation work, which will last an estimated eight months.

Work is also planned on the Judaïque swimming pool but with a different phasing on the two main pools, in order to maintain the opening to the public.

In the Cauderan district, which only has an outdoor swimming pool, a Nordic pool project should see the light of day in 2026.
