It is highly probable that while you are reading this, if you live in Madrid, your street or an adjoining one is under construction.

Or that it has been in recent months.

It is also possible for it to happen in any other point in the region or in Spain because the proximity of the elections usually comes with changes in streets, squares or highways.

And its capital was not going to be an exception.

Currently,

the City Council led by José Luis Martínez-Almeida has at least nine open projects

that will culminate before the municipal elections in May.

And in all of them the mayor has to cut the appointment before the electoral period begins, the first week of April, when inaugurations are prohibited by law.

As EL MUNDO already recounted, the renewal of the city is one of the main axes on which the current councilor intends to base his journey to the polls to repeat in the Palacio de Cibeles.

Especially in the downtown area and in districts like Salamanca that have undergone a good part of the reforms that have already been completed.

Among the nine that are still open, in the absence of an auction in the next three months, there are two that the Consistory sets as the main ones: finalizing the reform of Puerta del Sol and its surroundings and covering the M-30 in the area of the demolished Vicente Calderón.

The first of them is missing some fringes and was already reopened during the Constitution Bridge to avoid crowds of tourists coinciding with the start of Christmas and lighting dates.

A partial reopening that was criticized first for its delay by the merchants and neighbors and later because, since it was not completed and due to the rain,

the mortar that had not yet solidified caused a quagmire at kilometer zero of the capital

.

This work, which will be completed in the coming weeks, focuses on the complete pedestrianization of the square and its surrounding streets;

in the improvement of the Plaza de Pontejos, just a few meters from the enclave, and in the regrouping of the elements: statues, kiosks...

In the last bars there is also the complete coverage of the M-30 as it passes through the Mahou Calderón area, where the old Atlético de Madrid stadium was located, now converted into housing estates.

The vehicle circulation lanes are already definitive, but the union that will mean its surface with the aesthetics of Madrid Río in a park tribute to the field that hosted the matches of the rojiblanco club, demolished in the summer of 2020, has yet to be developed.

Although

the deadlines managed by the City Council of the capital are that the works finish during the spring of 2023

, in the Works and Equipment Area they confirm that this project, endowed with 46.4 million euros, can be inaugurated before they are placed the polls in May.

The municipal corporation is also advancing in the redevelopment of the Doctor Esquerdo-Pedro Bosch axis after the withdrawal of the scalextric from the area.

The initial project included the dismantling of the bridge from Valderribas street to the train tracks, the subsequent reconstruction of that bridge from the tracks to a few meters before Ciudad de Barcelona avenue and the redevelopment of the area around Doctor Esquerdo, that's it. without overpass, and also the reform of Méndez Álvaro street.

This is one of the points with the highest density of vehicles in the southeast area of the city and the City Council's intention was to put an end to a model, that of the scalextric, typical of the 70s to improve mobility in the area and make it more suitable to the present time.

For this, 11.2 million euros have been deposited from the municipal coffers and a period of 12 months has been given

.

As the work began in March 2022, the forecasts indicate that they will end in the same month of this year.

In the southern part of the capital, the City Council still has three projects open for completion

.

This same month, as indicated by the Works and Equipment Area, the urbanization of the Sierra Toledana area will be completed in Puente de Vallecas.

And, in Villaverde and Carabanchel, the remodeling of Ágata and Mayor squares and the improvement of Plaza de la Emperatriz, respectively, continue.

Going up north, the municipal government has yet to complete the adaptation of General Perón avenue, in the Tetuán district;

the improvement in the Plaza de La Vaguada, in front of the shopping center, belonging to Fuencarral-El Pardo, and the improvements in the surroundings of Avenida de la Ilustración, whose northern flank will end before the municipal elections and the second phase will be left after to complete the reform of this area.

Sources from the Works and Equipment Area affirm that once these works are completed,

"the greatest urban transformation that the city of Madrid has known since the M-30 was buried"

at the beginning of the century with Alberto Ruiz Gallardón at the in front of the Town Hall.

Because in recent months, the department headed by Paloma García Romero has also been developing a good number of works that have already been completed.

Among them, the new Plaza de España, begun in the mandate of Manuela Carmena, or the improvement of two sections of Alcalá street, between Cedaceros and Cibeles and between the M-30 and Quintana.

This same package includes the works on Ortega y Gasset and Eduardo Barreiros streets, in Salamanca and Villaverde;

the change of the Plaza de la Remonta, in Tetuán;

the creation of the boulevard on the Joaquín Costa-Francisco Silvela axis, after carrying out the collapse of the scalextric at the risk of it collapsing, and the open-air sculpture museum, whose works were completed last summer.
