Large parts of Europe were sweating during the first days of the year.

According to Germany's weather institute, where temperatures of 20 degrees were measured in several places after New Year's, they have not seen such a warm turn of the year since measurements began in 1881.

Czech television showed pictures of people's gardens flourishing and in Switzerland a typical spring warning was issued for high levels of pollen.

Continued extreme weather worries scientists

January's heat comes after a year of extreme weather around the world, with deadly heat waves in Europe and Asia and huge floods in Pakistan, among others.

It has caused several researchers and experts to react.

- The record heat in Europe over the New Year's weekend could be caused by the climate changes created by man, and in the same way climate changes make new heat waves increasingly serious and likely, says Friederike Otto, climate scientist at Imperial College, to Reuters.
