Podemos wants the Basque Parliament to demand a referendum before the Cortes Generales to replace the Monarchy with the Republic in Spain.

The initiative was registered this morning when the King Emeritus' birthday is celebrated and is justified by the link between King Juan Carlos and the Franco regime.

as long as the Head of State is the result of blood inheritance," says Podemos in a non-legal proposal whose approval will depend on the position adopted by the PNV.

Podemos has reactivated the political debate on the end of the Monarchy just fifteen months after it failed in another similar initiative that proposed "the end of the monarchy" for the alleged crimes committed by the emeritus King.

In October 2020, the purple coalition only achieved the support of EH Bildu while the PNV, PSE-EE, PP+C's and Vox voted against it in the Basque Chamber.

Now, on the day that Juan Carlos celebrates his birthday, Podemos proposes that the Basque Parliament "urge" the Cortes Generales to hold a referendum on the continuity of the Monarchy or its replacement by a Republic.

Podemos summarizes the Transition process with the institutional leadership of King Juan Carlos and maintains that the

prevented citizens from positioning themselves on the Head of State.

"That constitution was voted en bloc and the citizens could not decide on a fundamental aspect of their political system, such as their form of government," states the proposal signed by the spokesperson for the purple coalition Miren Gorrotxategi.

In its justification for the initiative, Podemos even uses an alleged response from President Suárez in an interview published in 1995 about the request that other European presidents make for a consultation that "legitimizes" the Crown.

Podemos' proposal will be debated next February after the parliamentary holiday period in January and it is more than likely that it will have the support of EH Bildu.

Only a change in the criteria of the PNV in the middle of the electoral campaign in Euskadi in view of the local and regional elections in May could facilitate its approval in a Basque Parliament that, to date, has avoided positioning itself in favor of a change in the Head of State .
