The multinational technology and e-commerce company Amazon has over 1.5 million employees worldwide.

In recent years, they have benefited from the corona pandemic as more and more people shop online.

The number of employees has increased year by year.

But as consumers have found their way back to stores in combination with a declining economy, the need for staff has decreased, the Wall Street Journal reports.

Now the company is laying off 18,000 people, according to a notice to staff sent out on Wednesday, Reuters reports.

It is mainly employees in e-commerce and HR who will be affected.

Operations in Sweden

Amazon is the latest in a string of major tech companies to lay off staff.

At the end of 2022, both Twitter and Facebook's ownership company Meta made cuts.

Amazon has operations in Sweden, but it is currently unclear whether Swedish workers will be affected by the layoffs.

Those affected will not be notified until January 18.
