Surprise at customs.

A Martinican footballer and his partner were arrested on December 31 at Roissy airport with more than 100 kg of cocaine hidden in their suitcases, AFP learned on Thursday from the Bobigny prosecutor's office and from a source familiar with the matter.

Coming from Fort-de-France, the two travelers were checked by customs officers on their arrival at Paris airport.

In their luggage were discovered respectively 50.7 and 53 kg of cocaine, according to a source familiar with the matter.

Midfielder for the Aiglon du Lamentin club (central Martinique) in Regional 1, Jean-Manuel Nedra, 29, is well known in the world of Martinican football.

"Without knowing his degree of involvement, we learned that one of our players was arrested at Roissy for drug smuggling," said Aiglon du Lamentin in a short message to the local press.

“Let us be stronger and united than ever to continue our work of education through sport, to fight against this scourge, to protect and alert our young people to the risks, consequences and abuses of this environment,” added the club.

The couple was presented Wednesday to an investigating judge in charge of the investigation, said the Bobigny prosecution.

The young man was placed in pre-trial detention and his companion released under judicial supervision.

The imprisoned sportsman has also been a member of the Martinique football team for more than ten years.

He was traveling in a personal capacity when he was arrested.
