THE ESSENTIAL

  • Russia on Monday acknowledged the death of 63 soldiers in Ukraine, killed in a Ukrainian strike in separatist territory in the east of the country, the heaviest losses in a single attack admitted by Moscow since the start of the invasion.

The Ukrainian general staff confirmed having carried out this strike on Makiivka, a city under Russian occupation, on New Year's Eve.

  • These heavy losses immediately provoked criticism of the Russian military command, accused in particular by the former separatist official Igor Strelkov, very familiar with the situation on the ground, of having stored ammunition in this unprotected building.

  • The announcement of this strike comes after a New Year marked by Russian bombardments on kyiv and other cities on Saturday, Sunday and Monday, which left five people dead and dozens injured.

Monday's announcement of heavy Russian losses in eastern Ukraine immediately provoked criticism of the Russian military command, accused in particular by former separatist leader Igor Strelkov, very familiar with the situation on the ground, of storing ammunition in this unprotected building.

Increasingly influential Russian war reporters claim that hundreds of people were killed in the attack on a vocational school in Makiivka and accuse senior military commanders of not having learned any lessons from their past mistakes.

is mobilized to give you, as every day, the latest information on the conflict.

Yesterday, Moscow acknowledged the death of 63 soldiers in Ukraine, killed in a Ukrainian strike in separatist territory in the east of the country.

These are above all the heaviest losses in a single attack admitted by Russia since the beginning of the invasion.

And this record could be underestimated.

The Strategic Communications Department of the Ukrainian Armed Forces has indeed stated that nearly 400 Russian soldiers were killed in Makiivka.

The general staff, which however did not confirm this figure, for its part declared that a balance sheet of the human “losses” was being established.
