United States: Congress is back in a new configuration

The American Congress returns on January 3 with a new configuration: the Democrats keep the Senate, but the Republicans take control of the House of Representatives with a slim majority, but a majority sufficient to undo certain measures adopted over the past two years.

Republicans don't want to waste time.

Well before the start of the school year on Tuesday, documents circulated revealing their program and their priorities in the House of Representatives.

From the first two weeks, they want to discuss bills related to immigration, crime, energy or even

abortion.

A total of eight texts are already ready for debate.

Republicans want, for example, to pass a law prohibiting the use of strategic petroleum reserves without projects to increase oil production on federal lands.

Because this year, they have repeatedly criticized President Biden for his use of reserves during soaring fuel prices.

Mobilize for the 2024 presidential election

They also want to adopt stricter immigration measures to deal with the

current crisis at the border with Mexico.  

Projects that have almost no chance of passing the Senate, still under the control of the Democrats.

But it reveals the dynamics that are likely to mark the next two years.

Their majority, even very slim, in the House of Representatives, offers a megaphone to the Republicans and they intend to use it to defend their positions and mobilize their electorate for the

presidential election of 2024.
