Good evening,

There are more overnight stays again: How do youth hostels smell?

After too much spray deodorant and rosehip tea.

Admittedly, this observation is a few years old, but it brings back memories.

In Hesse, 25 youth hostels belonged to the German Youth Hostel Association (DJH) at the end of 2022.

In 2019 there were 29. Four had to close.

Because the houses have suffered from the strict Corona rules, among other things.

school trips?

All cancelled.

tour groups?

Stay away.

In the Bad Homburg youth hostel, for example, 30,000 overnight guests had announced themselves for 2020.

In the end there were only 5000. Our author Julia Fietz wrote down for you how much the absence of guests affected the youth hostels, why some were able to bridge the dry spell while others were not and what plans there are for closed locations.

More employed: The desire for good news understandably increases in uncertain times.

It's nice if you don't have to look far for one.

The unemployment rate fell to 4.8 percent on average in 2022.

Previously, the rate was 5.2 percent.

"Meanwhile there are even more employees than before the beginning of the Corona crisis," says Joav Auerbach from the management of the regional directorate of the Federal Employment Agency in Hesse.

A closer look at the numbers curbs the euphoria.

There is a shortage of skilled workers in almost all sectors

, as confirmed by the Association of Hessian Business Associations (VhU).

We are talking about around 120,000 vacancies.

VhU Managing Director Dirk Pollert predicts: "The shortage of workers and skilled workers will unfold its force from year to year with the demographic development." He calls for the immigration authorities to be better organized in order to be able to integrate skilled workers more quickly into the labor market.

Help with finding a parking space: And because good news is much nicer to write than bad news, here's another one.

Anyone who has ever been looking for a free parking space in the state capital late at night and has almost bitten the steering wheel in despair might be interested in a project by the municipal mobility company Eswe Verkehr.

This puts live occupancy data online for three municipal parking spaces (https://www.wiesbaden.de/leben-in-wiesbaden/verkehr/auto/parken/park-ride.php).

Admittedly - the project sounds more modern than it looks in the implementation.

But in the end, the optics don't matter if it works.

The sensors transmit the occupancy data to the program in real time.

According to the Eswe company, commuters who already know the current occupancy rate before arriving at the parking lot can make a decision for or against using their own car.
