During the Christmas weekend, SVT Nyheter Sörmland told us about the most common mistakes we make at the recycling stations that FTI, Pärpackningsinsamlingen, is responsible for.

Those found at, for example, shopping centers and in residential areas.

A common error is that packaging and product are not differentiated, and only packaging may be thrown away at these stations.

Raised questions

This raised questions from SVT's viewers who wondered what this was due to.

The reason is the so-called producer responsibility.

- It is based on the fact that those who manufacture packaging must pay for it to be recycled, says Magnus Sandström, regional manager at FTI.

Rules are subject to change

What counts as packaging is decided by the government in the regulation on producer responsibility for packaging and can differ from year to year.

An example of this is the tealight cup, which was previously counted as a metal package, but ceased to be so in 2015. Then came a new interpretation of the EU directive for producer responsibility.

- Many people still put the tealight cups in the containers for metal.

It is not easy for the common man to keep up, says Magnus Sandström.

Things that do not count as packaging and cannot be thrown away at FTI's stations can be thrown at your municipal recycling centre, for example the tealight cup.

In the clip, FTI's regional manager Malin Larsson talks about how producer responsibility works and why you must not throw away the dish brush at the recycling station.
