news of the day

Rallies to pay tribute to the soldiers.

This Tuesday, in Russia, residents prayed and laid wreaths in memory of the 63 soldiers killed by a Ukrainian strike on New Year's Eve in Makïivka, near Donetsk.

In Samara, the town of origin of the majority of the deceased fighters, 200 people gathered, with the agreement of the authorities.

An unusual fact in Russia, where the power remains discreet about military losses in Ukraine.

After the many routs in recent months at the front, the death of the soldiers has led to a flood of criticism of the Russian command, even among supporters of the invasion in Ukraine, which began more than ten months ago.

Several commentators, influential on social networks, strongly criticized the fact that ammunition would have been stored not far from the building which was used to house the soldiers.

These are the words spoken by Volodymyr Zelensky.

The head of state, warned by his intelligence services, claims to face a threat: prolonged Russian strikes aimed at "exhausting" Ukraine, as reported by the BBC.

To respond to these new attacks, the Ukrainian president multiplied telephone conversations on Tuesday with his allied counterparts during the day and reported on his social networks.

Together with 🇬🇧 Prime Minister @RishiSunak, we discussed further defense cooperation.

We agreed to intensify our efforts to bring victory closer this year already.

We already have concrete decisions for this.

The Dutch and Norwegian Prime Ministers were also consulted.

The number of the day

40%.

Like the percentage of Ukrainian territories occupied by Russia since the invasion, which have since been liberated.

A figure put forward by General Valerii Zaluzhnyi in a Telegram post, while the Ukrainian army notably took over Kherson in November, after eight months of Russian occupation.

This army executive also revealed the length of the front line: 3,786 kilometers, including an active strip of 1,500 kilometers.

The trend

Since September, nearly 500 Russian drones have been shot down by air defense, Yuriy Ihnat, spokesman for the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, said.

During an interview with a local television channel, the officer was pleased with the good results of the anti-aircraft defense: all of the 84 drones launched by Russia on the first two days of the year were shot down.
