In its report on the attack, which took place near the village of Cholakivka, and targeted Russian soldiers and Russian military equipment, the Ukrainian General Staff said, "The enemy's losses amounted to 500 dead and wounded."

The authority said the attack took place on New Year's Eve.

The General Staff said that the Russian units were hit in the village of Fedorivka the day after that attack, and that the number of casualties was not yet clear.

Fedorivka and Cholakivka lie on the southeastern side of the Dnieper River in the Russian-controlled part of the Kherson region.

The news comes after Kyiv reported on Monday that another attack on New Year's Eve killed hundreds of Russian soldiers in a makeshift shelter in the town of Makeyevka in Donetsk region, eastern Ukraine.

The Russian Ministry of Defense officially acknowledged the killing of 63 of its soldiers, but Kyiv said that about 400 Russian soldiers were killed and 300 others were wounded in the attack.

Russian military bloggers reported hundreds of casualties.

According to the statement of the Russian Ministry of Defense, the Russian forces eliminated more than 40 Ukrainian military personnel on the Kobyansk axis, and two sabotage and reconnaissance groups belonging to the Ukrainian forces were destroyed in the areas of the towns of Novoselovskoye and Tapaevka in the Kharkiv region.

In the direction of Krasny Liman, Russian artillery and heavy launchers attacked four assault detachments of Ukrainian forces in the regions of Chervonaya Dibrova in Luhansk, Novosadovoy, Serebryanka and Grigorovka in Donetsk.

According to the statement, the losses of the Ukrainians amounted to more than 120 dead and wounded, four armored fighting vehicles, three pickup trucks and two cars.

On the Donetsk axis, about 90 Ukrainian soldiers were killed in the clashes in the Krasnoye, Petrivskoye, Nevelskoye, Georgievka and Pobeda regions of Donetsk, and two tanks, five armored fighting vehicles and seven special military vehicles were destroyed.

On the southern Donetsk axis, more than 30 Ukrainian soldiers were eliminated, two armored fighting vehicles, and three pickup trucks were destroyed by artillery shelling on Ukrainian units in the regions of Prichytovka, Zolotaya Neva, and Novodonetskoye in Donetsk.

The statement added that "more than 130 foreign mercenaries were also neutralized by high-precision strikes of the Russian Aerospace Forces on points of temporary deployment of the Foreign Legion units in the areas of Maslyakovka settlements and the city of Kramatorsk in Donetsk."

Russian forces targeted four depots of artillery ammunition and military vehicles of the Ukrainian Armed Forces in the Gulyipol and Chervonoye regions of the Zaporizhia region.

A depot of weapons and military vehicles of Ukrainian forces near the village of Tyaginka in Kherson province was also destroyed.

As a result of missile and air strikes on points of concentration of military equipment in the area of ​​the Drujkovka railway station in Donetsk, two HIMARS launchers and four Czech-made RM-70 Vampire missile launchers were destroyed.

And more than 800 missiles for launchers, six military vehicles, in addition to up to 120 Ukrainian soldiers.

In the city of Kramatorsk, positions were blown up and two "Himars" launchers, which were bombing cities in Donetsk, were destroyed.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that Russia is preparing to escalate its attacks on his country using Iranian-made explosive planes, in a televised speech.

"We have information that Russia is planning a prolonged attack with Iranian Shahed planes," Zelensky said in his speech on Monday.

He added that Moscow's goal is to break Ukraine's resistance by "exhausting our people and our energy," more than 10 months after the start of the Russian military operation.

"In the coming weeks, the nights may be very restless," Zelensky warned.

He added that his country's forces shot down "more than 80 Iranian-made drones" during the first two days of the new year.
