After attacks on emergency services on New Year's Eve, the Hessian State Fire Brigade Association and the Police Union (GdP) are calling for consistent action against violent criminals.

Even if the New Year's Eve in Hesse was much more peaceful than in Berlin, for example, there were threatening attacks.

According to the state fire brigade association in Dreieich, firefighters were sprayed with irritant gas on the way back from the operation.

Firefighters and the police were also shot at with pyrotechnics in Frankfurt.

In total, the fire brigades in Hesse had to deploy more than 970 times.

Most of these were small fires.

Justice should react faster

The extent of the attacks against emergency services "took on a new dimension," said Norbert Fischer, President of the State Fire Brigade Association.

He therefore calls for "quicker and, above all, more consistent action by the judiciary, even if this often means the maximum penalty".

The police union (GdP) also calls on the judiciary to send “quick signals and prompt procedural inquiries” in the event of attacks on emergency services.

The discussion about firecracker bans does not help to prevent attacks.

"An eroding society, as it obviously currently exists, must be countered in a sustainable manner and not with more and more blatant bans," said the Hessian GdP chairman Jens Mohrherr.

The attacks are also condemned by Hesse's Prime Minister Boris Rhein (CDU).

"Attacks on emergency services are always attacks on society and thus on all of us."
