Debris from a drone destroyed over kyiv overnight from Sunday to Monday injured one person in a northeastern district of the Ukrainian capital, said the mayor of the latter, Vitali Klitschko, while Russia has been shelling the city since Saturday.

A 19-year-old man was taken to hospital, Vitali Klitschko said via Telegram messaging.

Shortly before midnight on Sunday evening, warning sirens were announced in Kyiv and much of eastern Ukraine, continuing to sound for at least two hours.

Ukrainian air defense systems destroyed nine Iranian-made drones over the Dnipropetrovsk and Zaporizhia regions overnight from Sunday to Monday, the local command of the Ukrainian army said.

Shortly before and after the transition to 2023, bombings on kyiv and seven other regions had already killed at least four people and injured 50, according to Ukrainian authorities.

For its part, Moscow claimed to have targeted unmanned aircraft manufacturing facilities.

An air attack was underway Monday at dawn in kyiv, placed on alert, the regional military administration announced on Telegram.

"Stay in the shelters!"

asked Sergei Popko, head of the military administration of the city of kyiv.

"All emergency services are on the way," wrote kyiv mayor Vitali Klitschko, who reported explosions in one of the city's districts.

  • 12:40 am: strikes denounced against areas controlled by Russia

The Ukrainian army carried out strikes on the night of New Year's Eve against the town of Makiivka and other Russian-controlled areas in the Donetsk region, Russian officials said, while state media reported that a military building had been hit, killing several people.

At least 25 rockets were fired against the Donetsk region on New Year's Eve, said the administration installed locally by Moscow as part of its "special military operation" launched last February.

According to the official TASS news agency, citing Russian representatives from the region, at least 15 people were injured in Makiivka following a series of Himar rocket fire.

No comment was obtained from the Russian Ministry of Defence, which indicated in its daily update that Russia had destroyed seven Himars rockets including two in the Makiivka region.

A senior representative installed by Moscow in the Donetsk region said that a strike had hit a school, which apparently served as a base for Russian troops.

This attack happened two minutes after the start of the new year, added Daniil Bezsonov.

"There were deaths and injuries, the exact number is still undetermined," he wrote on Telegram messaging.
