North Korea fired a short-range ballistic missile into the sea overnight from Saturday to Sunday, the South Korean army reported, quoted by the South Korean agency Yonhap. 

A few hours earlier, Saturday morning, Pyongyang had already fired three ballistic missiles.

The 2023 first-day shot was launched from Yongseong district in the capital of Pyongyang, Yonhap said citing the general staff, and landed in the East Sea, also known as the Sea of ​​Japan. 

Military tensions on the Korean Peninsula have risen sharply in 2022, with North Korea carrying out missile tests almost monthly.

In particular, it tested an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) in March for the first time in five years.

Another North Korean ICBM fell off Japan in November.

This North Korean launch also followed the incursion of five North Korean drones into southern airspace earlier this week.

The North Korean incursion was the first such incident in five years and prompted an apology from Seoul's defense minister after his air force failed to shoot down a single drone despite the sending hunters on a mission that lasted five hours.  

Separately, the ruling Workers' Party kicked off the fifth day of its annual meeting on Friday, which continued on Saturday and aims to outline its policy for 2023, the official news agency reported. North Korean KCNA.

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un issued guidelines to strengthen Pyongyang's defense capabilities as part of the meeting.
